Our competitive team is cohesive, driven, and dominating. Beating
other schools in both lead and bouldering at 2023 Mid-Atlantic Divisionals, we’re determined to support and push our best climbers, while also developing intermediate talent for future
success.
In March the Climbing Team at UVA won the 2023 Divisional Championship in both bouldering and ropes climbing, defeating other collegiate teams in Virginia, Maryland, DC, West Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Several athletes were also sent to the National Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado to compete with universities around the country.
In collegiate competitive climbing there are two divisions of competition: recreational and advanced.
Advanced competition tends to center around a difficulty grade of V6+/5.12a for women and V8+/5.12c for men. Recreational difficulty is usually around V4+/5.10c for women and V5+/5.11a for men.
It is important for our team to have climbers of all these levels representing us in competition, so our competitive training team is open to every student! We choose climbers carefully from our lengthy application process at the beginning of each semester, taking into account climbing experience and dedication to improvement. Raw skill isn’t necessarily required to be accepted; it’s much more important to have a passion and drive to compete and get better as a well-rounded climber.

Our private Competitive Team practices are on Tuesdays from 7pm to 9pm at Rockytop Climbing in Charlottesville with our professionally trained coach Connor Hay. Connor makes workouts and personalized exercises for team members to do inside and outside of practice. We also make monthly Sunday trips to the Sportrock Performance Institute in Alexandria, Virginia for private coaching from some of the best coaches in the nation. It is expected that Competitive Team members attend weekly Tuesday competition practices, Thursday practices at Triangle Rock Club, and Monday or Sunday practices at Rockytop every week. We will carpool as a team to all events. The full price of the Competitive Team is $130 a person on top of the $70 for normal team dues.
The Competitive Team Membership comes with:
– Gas reimbursements for monthly trips to Sportrock
– Rockytop membership for three months
– The full cost of one USA Climbing qualifying event
– Private coaching
Our below application includes a questionnaire and our version of tryouts.
The tryouts consist of three videos of your proudest climbs at Slaughter Climbing Center on grounds for us to review.
