UVA Competitive Team

Our competitive team is cohesive, driven, and dominating. We won the for both lead and bouldering in 2023 Mid-Atlantic Divisionals and crushed it at 2024 Divisionals. We’re determined to support and push our best climbers, while also developing intermediate talent for future success.

2023 Mid-Atlantic Divisionals Team Champions-Ropes & Bouldering

In March the Climbing Team at UVA won the 2023 Divisional Championship in both bouldering and ropes climbing, defeating other collegiate teams in Virginia, Maryland, DC, West Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Several athletes were also sent to the National Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado to compete with universities around the country.

Competition Climbing For a Variety of Skill Levels

In collegiate competitive climbing there are two divisions of competition: recreational and advanced.

Advanced competition tends to center around a difficulty grade of V6+/5.12a for women and V8+/5.12c for men.  Recreational difficulty is usually around V4+/5.10c for women and V5+/5.11a for men.

It is important for our team to have climbers of all these levels representing us in competition, so our competitive training team is open to every student! We choose climbers carefully from our lengthy application process at the beginning of each semester, taking into account climbing experience and dedication to improvement. Raw skill isn’t necessarily required to be accepted; it’s much more important to have a passion and drive to compete and get better as a well-rounded climber.
